My Thoughts On Pitch Perfect 2

Back in 2012, I’d watched Pitch Perfect. And I had loved it so much that I continued watching it [pieces of it] for another three years.

Today, the torrent gods finally made Pitch Perfect 2 available. I knew what I was going for when I started the film. The promotions for PP2 had started way back in October-November 2014. And back then I thought their marketing team was amazing, I still do, kinda.

We’re Back Pitches. Pitch Slapped. Pure gold puns and taglines.

But then I realized they didn’t know the difference between promotion and oversharing. SO MANY VIDEOS AND UPDATES began storming YouTube and Facebook and everywhere since Jan. Heck, the final sequence, one part of it made it online before the film even released and I was sorely disappointed by it.

Everyone knows you don’t watch those films for the plot, you watch it for the A Capella music. But this time, the Bellas sucked. The newbie was boring, the Bellas whiny and boring and I could go on and on. And we all know the ending. They win the World Championships. EVEN AFTER DAS SOUND MACHINE PERFORMED FALL OUT BOY, AFTER PENTATONIX and the Indian guys – so sterotypical. Satire at its worst.

The plot is utter rubbish. No, two hours of the movie are nothing. No direction – in fact, the Bellas even play a short game of Wipeout during Camp. They never seem to practise, just end up singing highly choreographed songs.

Das Sound Machine deserved to win it fair and square. Every song in the film was boring. More than half of the cast had nothing but cameos. Pitch Perfect was Bella’s film [whose surname is Mitchell? I did not know that], PP2 was an amalgamation of Becca, Emily, Fat Amy and Chloe. I only watched it to the end because I love Anna Kendrick and Adam Devine [who was reduced to a comic caper in a completely avoidable role].

This film shared too much before it was released and had nothing left to show us. Sigh, what a waste of perfectly good talent. I am very disappointed.

Clearly, they didn't.

Clearly, they didn’t.

Two stars, one for Anna and one for Adam. I’ll probably watch the third movie to see if anything has improved. Probably not though.

– still wondering how pentatonix lost to these losers. and to das sound machine. what even. –

Until tomorrow,

Nia Carnelio.

Book Review: Blood Promise, Vampire Academy #4 by Richelle Mead

Hey guys!

I finally read another book in May, the last one being The Mistake? I think. Eh, for reasons I’ve still not finished The HitchHiker’s Guide To the Galaxy which I started way back in Feb. May has been a slow month for me, it’s been too hot to read and too easy to watch Castle. But hey, I finally got through Blood Promise, all 493 pages worth of it. And it was a task, let me tell you that.

Took me three days and two hundred pages to get into the book. Here’s my review:

Name: Blood Promise, by Richelle Mead

Genre: YA Paranormal

Published: February, 2010

Rating: Three Stars

My Review: [Spoilers]

If I had to describe this book with one word, it’d be – long. At 493 pages, this book moved excruciatingly slowly. I’m not kidding, it took me way more than 200 pages to finally get into the book. And after a short fast paced action, we again get to read really boring stuff before being catapulted to the ending in the last hundred pages or so.

I’ve come to realize these books are far longer than they need to be. The first book was just right, now, the plot seems stretched out and predictable.

Rose Hathaway is still a delightfully strong character and Lissa is still the pushover, I mean, come on – if you need the heroine to come and help you out when she’s thousands of miles away and through a mind link no less, you’re weak and boring and totally not interesting to read about.

Dimitri is probably the character I loved best after Rose. Seeing him, changed through her eyes was pretty damn cool. The scenes with him were the most interactive and interesting in the whole novel. The last fight was pretty spectacular too and I really enjoyed reading it.

Character development for Rose, Adrian, Dimitri and even Christian came through very well. Can’t say the same for Lissa though. She’s still the delicate darling. But other characters were not fully explored – Sydney, Abe, Avery -they had potential but it seems like they were just accesories.

The ending was predictable and everyone who possessed a functioning brain would know that since Rose didn’t stick around, Dimitri was clearly alive and kicking. I kinda figured about the Strigoi to human thingy too. I figure the next book will be about that? I dunno if I want to invest my time in two more of the same dragged out plot lines and books.

The book would’ve been crisper if it’d been shorter and too the point. Setting up the locales and getting the reader familiar took too long and instead of going through with the book in a day or so, I took 4 days. Also, what’s up with the extended prologue. Every reader who picks it up will automatically know it’s a series, there wasn’t any need to do a three book recap in fifty or so pages scattered through the books.

All in all, a pretty average novel. I need to find something that will blow my mind. I’ll be reading The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater next.

Until tomorrow,

Nia Carnelio.

The Ryan

It’s STORY TIME with me!

So, here’s where I tell you about my run in with boys who were called Ryan. Where I live, there seems to be an abundance of guys with that name, all of them in and around my age group. A fact: I know SEVERAL Ryans.

  1. shocked
  2. The first Ryan, was the younger brother of my ex-best friend and I developed a huge crush on him back when I was twelve? Some time around then. But I never told him, and he never expressed interest. So I kinda moved on.
  3. With a boy named Ryan who was in my year at the All Boy’s School close to All Girl’s School I went to. He seemed to like me and I wanted a boyfriend [to prove I could have one] and when the nice guy asked me out, I said yes. It was hella awkward. No, really. I cringe every time I think about that June in 2011.
  4. I broke up with boyfriend Ryan in July 2011, we lasted twenty days before I realized I was too young [14] to commit and not look at any other guy. Noble intentions, not.
  5. friends7
  6. A little before the crush and the boyfriend, I really, really liked Jake Ryan on Hannah Montana and I rooted for them, until it all went downhill. I’m covering every Ryan on the list here.
  7. In 2012, I volunteered at a children’s summer camp in my church and another Ryan there, lent me his Percy Jackson books to read. He gave me all the books that were out. He was a huge guy, a little dark, but he seemed nice to me. My pride would tell me it’s because he kinda liked me, but I never did get to know. And now I never will.
  8. It was around this time I watched The Proposal and fell in love with Andrew, the character played by Ryan Reynolds. I shipped him and Bullock so much throughout the movie.
  9. One of my former best friends also had a sorta boyfriend named Ryan.
  10. I know and dislike two other Ryans.
  11. I now have a humongous crush on Detective Ryan from Castle. His eyes are so, so blue. They remind me of Misha’s eyes.
  12. I have a feeling I’ll be meeting more Ryans in my life. Or reconnecting with the old ones. Sigh.

God, I hope none of the Ryans [especially, my ex], or the ex-best friends or the former friends or anyone who knows me reads this post.

Anyway, that’s my tale of The Ryan. Have you anyone in your life with the name of someone else you know?

Until tomorrow,

Nia Carnelio.

The Forgotten Day

Hey guys, technically I’ve  not written today. It’s past midnight where I live and I only just remembered I hadn’t posted anything. The date will still show up as 28th May though, since WordPress doesn’t operate on IST.

I didn’t do much today,  slept a lot and read Vampire Academy and watched Castle. I’m one third of the way down with season four. It’s moving quickly this time  and I fear my heart won’t  remain whole  after this.

I’ve got college tomorrow and that means I’ll have to sleep a bit earlier. Cleaning duties. I’ll be travelling one hour to and fro to clean the comps room which will take my friend and me less than half an hour. I wasn’t kidding when I said this was a student run fest. But I’ll be meeting my best friend and so it won’t be a waste.

Hope you’ve had a more productive day and haven’t forgotten to blog or do your daily tasks.

RIP Charlie.

RIP Charlie.

Have a good one.

Until tomorrow,

People’s Author & Internship Tales

Hey guys, so something pretty cool happened a few days back. I was awarded the title of People’s Author by the internship I worked for from December to February.

I received a certificate too, just without my photo. And thanks to this, I’ll be getting a new Kindle for my efforts. How cool is that? Very.

Especially since I’ve gotten back to reading in full force. I plan to read a lot more this year. Any reader worth her salt should be able to finish a five hundred page book in a day or so. How can I call myself a reader if I procrastinate and delay reading while indulging in watching TV shows all day long? Not that I’m doing anything even remotely productive, but it’s the summer holidays and I can forgive that.

Hopefully, they won’t delay my Kindle more [the fucking internship ended in Feb, I’ve gotta get my money and my Kindle], because my patience is wearing a bit thin now. Sigh. Find your way to me, Kindle.

Until tomorrow,

Nia Carnelio.

Another Day

Hey guys,

Well to tell you the truth, I didn’t do much today. Except make to-do lists and cross a couple items off them. I went and checked the library and found Blood Promise. I already had the ebook ready to be read, but since I’d gotten out of the house [I rarely do that] I figured I’d borrow it. With a week’s deadline looming in, I’d finish the book and get over my short reading slump. The Vampire Academy books – I went through three in three days. I’ll post a review as soon as I’m done with the novel.

In other news, I’m on the fifteenth episode of the third season of Castle. Yep, I’m moving quickly. Caskett kissed and I died of feels.

God, I adore Caskett.

God, I adore Caskett.

Other than these two updates, nothing much – oh wait, I won another giveaway. More books for me! Yay!

Until tomorrow,

Nia Carnelio.

P.S – I know that gif has been used earlier too, but it’s my favorite one. So sue me. [Don’t, actually, I’m quite broke.] tumblr_luqaotV3PO1qlo9k7

Not The Oscars But The Liebsters

Hey guys,

So yesterday I was nominated for the Liebster award. I’ve been given / nominated for this before on my primary blog, back in April 2014. Well, Brittany from BrittanyMarieReads, this time on my summer blog. So yay, let’s get on with it.

The deets:

The Liebster Award is a way for members of the blogging community to recognize new bloggers/blogs. It is a fun way to support our fellow bloggers and create a sense of community. The rules seem to vary a little depending on who is giving the award but here are the basics:

  • Nominate ten blogs and let them know you have nominated them
  • Each nominee must have under 1000 followers
  • Provide a link to the blog that nominated you
  • Answer the questions that they have provided for you
  • Create ten new questions for the blogs that you have nominated
  • Create a post that includes all of this information

The blogs I nominate will be at the end. Now, I’ll answer Brittany’s questions and ask some of mine.

1. If you could choose any finished series to come out with one more book which series would you choose?

Well, Harry Potter. But not technically another book about him. I want a Marauder Era book. Or seven of them, I’m not complaining.

2. If you could choose any series to become a television show which series would you choose?

Oh umm, probably Castle. Would be really fun to read. Or Supernatural, sans the Wincest or any of that nonsense. I’m all cool with Destiel though. It’s time they made it canon.

3. Which character do you think was poorly cast in a movie based on a book? And who would you have cast instead?

The whole Percy Jackson cast. Come on, from eleven to seventeen? That’s not making a leap, that’s changing the whole fucking plot of the series. A better Annabeth and sticking to the books would’ve catapulted the series to HP like fame.

4. Which character death was the hardest to deal with and why?

I did feel really bad when Sirius and Fred and Remus died. But the first time I shed a tear over a book was over Anna, from My Sister’s Keeper. And countless fanfictions have made sure I cry every time I think about how James and Lily Potter died.

5. If you could spend the day in any fictional world which world would it be?

Oh, wow. the possibilities are endless and each one of them are deadly. I’d love to spend a day in the Harry Potter universe or the Supernatural one. But I’d probably be a muggle in the former and dead in the latter.

6. Imagine that you can have any fictional character “guest star” in a fictional world other than its own. Which character would you choose? Which world would you have them appear in? Why?

I would love for Sam and Dean to guest star in Harry Potter. They’d kill off Voldemort like that *snaps fingers* and James and Lily would still be alive and happy with Harry. Also, Sam and Dean are a single unit -you can’t have one without the other.

7. Which character do you most identify with?

Dean Winchester. And Hermione. My love for my sibling, my obsession with books is something that’s a combination between the two characters I love.

8. If you could choose any book or series to come out with a companion cookbook that contained recipes for food and drinks mentioned in the book which would you choose?

Harry Potter. We have the some amazing things already, but hey – leaping chocolate frogs, actual booger flavoured Bertie Bott’s and Firewhiskey and wow. You’re in gastronomical heaven.

9. If you could choose any book or series to be turned into a videogame which would you choose?

I don’t actually play video games but tweaking the question, I’d love to play a game involving solving crimes and all just like in Castle or well, Sherlock.

10. If you could choose any supporting character to get their own book or series who would you choose?

From books, it would be Sirius and Remus from Harry Potter, giving me the Marauders and from shows, it’d be Andy from Modern Family. I really, really like him.

  1. Name your favorite book(s) or series and tell me why.
  2. If you could save any two characters from the books you’ve read, who would they be?
  3. Pick One: Fifty Shades of Grey or Twilight. [State reasons].
  4. Which book are you currently lusting over?
  5. If you could kidnap any character from shows or books who would it be? Remember, they’d be living with you.
  6. Describe your blog in five words.
  7. Who’s your inspiration? [Or what’s your inspiration?]
  8. If you had to kill, what or whom would you kill for?
  9. Which shows do you love?
  10. What’s the most terrible scene you’ve read / seen / watched?

The bloggers:

Good thing I made so many friends these past two months.

Listen, I painstakingly added each one’s blogs, so you better check ’em out. They’re really cool, okay. Off you go with a T-Swift gif to accompany you.

Strutting like a boss.

Strutting like a boss.

Until tomorrow,

Book Review: Never Never Part Two [Coming Soon]

EDIT: Turns out, I didn’t realize I wasn’t posting my review here, but instead on my primary blog. But I wrote, and it counts. Here’s the post: Never Never Part Two

Book Review: Never Never Part Two

I’m currently nearing the end of College Hoover and Tarryn Fisher’s Never Never Part Two. I’ll be uploading the review tomorrow morning-afternoon.

This saved review post will motivate me to read faster and not procrastinate as much.

Until tomorrow,

Nia Carnelio.

Second Edit: I’ve decided to hold off on reading Never Never Part Two until part three comes out. It’s just easier that way. The review will also follow then [obviously]. Thanks.

Of Castle and OTPs

“Do I look like a killer to you?”

“Yes, you kill my patience.”

Castle is quickly becoming one of my favorite shows, and I have a theory why.

Don't blow holes in my ship.

Don’t blow holes in my ship.

Castle and Beckett remind me of James and Lily AU [Alternate Universe] and Esposito and Ryan remind me of Sirius and Remus respectively. Ryan is a pale, smart, soft person, just like Remus. Esposito is a bold, fun and hot guy like Sirius, not that Ryan is hot. Beckett and Castle bicker like James and Lily do and it takes them six to seven years to get hitched, you see what I mean?

Castle is the living embodiment of James’ witty and amazingly fun personality. Beckett is a fun and smart and beautiful woman. Come on, this show is literally my OTP in the flesh. Can you blame me for breezing through two seasons?

James and Lily are my one true pairing okay? Nothing tops them.

God, I adore Caskett.

God, I adore Caskett.

That’s also why the Never Never Part Two review hasn’t surfaced yet.

Until next time,

Nia Carnelio.

[New episode of GoT today, how many of you are gonna watch it?]

My Long, Long TBR

So winning books is awesome, eh?

Laughing on the outside, dying on the inside.

Laughing on the outside, dying on the inside.

Not if you have college beginning in less than three weeks, and are part of the organizing team of one of the biggest college fests of your country, are running a daily blog, watching a new TV show, catching up on old ones – yep, I seem to have bitten off more than I can chew.

Here, have a Misha gif for my woes.

Here, have a Misha gif for my woes.

I have over thirty books, maybe even more that need to be read. Some though, have to be read quicker and earlier than the others. So here’s my list of the books I’ll be reading until June 15th, 2015.

  • Never, Never Part Two [currently reading]
  • The Scorpio Races [borrowed from a friend]
  • Every Last Word [is out on June 16th, need to read the e-galley before that]
  • Between The Notes [out on June 16th as well, have a physical ARC]
  • The Beginning of Never [received e-copy and to be reviewed by June]

I excited to read these books, just have to make a little more time – less Castle and aimless internet surfing and more quality time reading, should do the trick, yeah?

Until tomorrow,

Nia Carnelio.
